Forbes earlier this month released its ranking of "America's Best Large Employers" and "America's Best Midsize Employers" for 2022.

About the rankings

For the rankings, Forbes worked with market research firm Statista to cull data from a survey of 60,000 U.S. employees working for businesses with at least 1,000 workers. In the survey, respondents were asked to rate on a scale from zero to 10 how likely they were to recommend their organization to others. Respondents were also asked to rate their employers on additional factors, including working conditions, development opportunities, and compensation.

The final "Best Large Employers," organizations with more than 5,000 employees, and "Best Midsize Employers," organizations with 1,000 to 5,000 employees, lists each feature 500 companies. The lists include health care employers across several categories, including "health care and social" and "health care equipment and services."

Overall, American workers' priorities in the workplace have drastically changed throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the United States currently has around 10.9 million job openings and an unemployment rate of 4%. In this unprecedented job market, the criteria for being placed among the top U.S. employers have changed.

"The employees are in control at this point because there's such a plethora of openings," said Paul McDonald, Forbes contributor and senior executive director at Robert Half. "With the number of job openings today and the choices that good candidates have, you have to move swiftly but diligently."

"A lot of organizations have realized that, through all the retention efforts and through all the resignations, they've had to re-recruit their current staff," McDonald added.
